NOPEC (Northeast Ohio Public Energy Council)

The Village of Sugar Bush Knolls is a member of NOPEC’s natural gas and electric aggregation programs.  NOPEC is a non-profit group of over 235 communities that negotiates lower utility rates.  As Ohio’s largest governmental energy aggregator, NOPEC buys gas and electricity in bulk to help lower your utility bills.  Customers can choose from a variety of rate plans including 12- and 24-month fixed term, monthly variable and even 100% renewable products. For more information, go to nopec.org or contact NOPEC’s Customer Care Center at 855-667-3201.

Joining NOPEC cost the Village and its residents nothing.  By living in the Village, residents are automatically a member of NOPEC, but they can opt-out.  Natural gas and electricity are handled as separate contracts but follow the same procedures, as described below.

Village residents who do not have a contract with a natural gas or electricity supplier will

  1. Become members of NOPEC if they do nothing.
  2. Receive a letter offering them the opportunity to opt-out of NOPEC every two years for natural gas and every three years for electricity.
  3. Continue to have their electricity and natural gas delivered by the local utility.  There is no disruption of service and the utility company will still continue to send the natural gas or electric bill.
  4. Receive electric or natural gas rates negotiated exclusively for NOPEC member communities if they don’t opt-out of NOPEC.

Village residents who have a contract with another natural gas or electricity supplier

  1. Won’t receive an opt-out letter.
  2. Have the option of canceling their current contract and opting to use NOPEC, but they might have to pay an early withdrawal fee to their current supplier.
  3. Can sign up for NOPEC’s electronic newsletter for energy-saving tips and chances to win smart home technology.  To sign up, go to nopec.org/subscribe.

Village residents who let their contract with another natural gas or electricity supplier lapse will receive an opt-out letter from NOPEC within two months.

More information (including determining if NOPEC is already your natural gas or electricity supplier) can be found here or by calling (855)-667-3201.
